Our story

Bill & Angie were looking for the perfect beef cattle breed for their farm. They were introduced to Brian & Randy Cates of Modoc, Indiana who raised purebred polled shorthorns and they instantly fell in love with the beautiful iconic coloring and docile temperament of the creatures.

The young Bateson Farms found the shorthorn community welcoming and made it a goal to build their beautiful herd by purchasing the reserve grand champion from the Iowa State Fair, named Fancy. She became the cornerstone of the herd and mothered 9 beautiful heifers over her 14 years of life.

Bill is also a Hancock County Commissioner and owner of RoofMaxx in the NW Ohio area.

Angie is also the owner and sole practitioner of Dr. Angela B. Bateson, DDS serving Findlay, Ohio.

Picked with care

A wonderful feature of the shorthorn breed is the taste of the beef. The meat is perfectly marbled with a wonderfully balanced fat ratio. They also crossbred with black angus, the American standard breed, to multiply and diversify the herd. Today Bateson Farms keeps a herd of 25-30 pure & cross-bred cattle, shown every year at the Hancock County Fair, sold as breeding stock and sold as freezer beef to the local community.
